The icon of the resurrection

Page history last edited by Dimitris 15 years, 3 months ago

The icon of Christ’s resurrection in the Orthodox Church.

Two types of depiction exist

The second depicts sometimes Peter and John in outside the empty tomb and sometimes the angel sat on the stone, who appeared to the Myrrh-Bearing women.

The “real fact” of Christ’s resurrection has never been depicted in the Orthodox hagiography, although Lazarus’s resurrection has been depicted on icons. This happens because Lazarus’s resurrection is thought as a miracle while Christ’s resurrection is something too difficult for the human mind to comprehend.

Christ’s descent to Hades

On the base of the icon among steep rocks an abyss is opened up. We can discern the gates of hell and the frightened faces of Devil and Hades. Christ descends there, to the Earth’s bottoms to preach the salvation.

In the center of the icon, over the cave we can discern Christ who won death anal appears as a savior after his battle with Hades. Adam, Eve, Kings and prophets of the Old Testament appear and recognize Christ as a Savior.

The first is Christ’s descent to Hades (icon)
